How to paint decking in Ireland & the UK

Clean thoroughly
Sweep, then wash off algae, grease and grime. Let the boards dry fully.

Sand and fix
Sand rough or splintered boards and punch down any proud fixings.

Cut in
Brush around posts, edges and between boards first.

Two coats
Roll along the length of the boards, then recoat once touch-dry.

Decking questions
Will it be slippery when wet?
Like any coating it can be slick when wet. Add an anti-slip additive on steps and shaded areas if needed.
How long before I can walk on it?
Light foot traffic once fully dry — leave it overnight before putting furniture back.
Do I need to strip old decking stain?
Remove anything flaking or loose and sand back glossy or oily patches so the new coat can grip.
How much do I need?
Up to 12m² per litre per coat, less on weathered timber. Measure the deck and use our coverage calculator.
